What is osteopathy?

Osteopathic evaluation and treatment is based on viewing the body as a whole by studying how the body's structures (bones, joints, ligaments, discs, muscles, tendons and nerves) are integrated and function with each other within the body's system.

Our  practitioners identify abnormalities within the human structure, which are causing it to function less efficiently. We then tackle the problem with osteopathic medical treatment to provide relief, and a remedy to the pain.

As every individual is unique, we examine each patient's own body mechanics to facilitate a more effective healing process.

Exercises may be suggested as well as advice to relieve the symptoms and improve the patient's health and quality of life.

Jonathan Hobbs & Associates osteopathic consultation process:

On your first visit our practitioners will take a full medical history and discuss any current health problems.

It is then important to examine your body's framework. Depending on the location of the problem it is usually necessary to make a full examination of the spine or the region where there is pain. This may involve undressing to underwear or shorts and a t-shirt.

The actual examination will depend on your symptoms. For example, it may include neurological or circulatory tests. It will always include palpation, which is a way of feeling the body tissues to identify problem areas. The areas local to where you experience symptoms, and those that are connected mechanically to that area, are likely to be palpated.

We then discuss our findings with you and propose the best method of treatment. According to your needs and preference, this could vary from soft tissue techniques or joint articulation, to more subtle techniques.. We may also provide postural and if appropriate dietary advice and rehabilitative exercises may also be prescribed.
